Scooter Safety, Safety Considerations to Keep in Mind While Riding

Electric scooters, electric mopeds, or electric moped motorcycles are fun and exiting for adults and children of all ages, either for alternative transportation or recreational purposes. As fun as riding a scooter might be there is one very important thing for any cyclist to keep in mind, and that is scooter safety.

There are two basic safety considerations that every cyclist must be aware of to minimize the possible risk of any accident or injury.

The first safety consideration every cyclist needs to be aware of is proper safety gear. The most important piece of safety gear for example would be a helmet. More cyclists die every year from head related injuries than any other type of injury. This is because someone did not wear a helmet.

If you ever have watched a motocross race you would have noticed that all the racers wore a helmet. Not only do they wear helmets, but they also wear a protective suit. Although the motocross race example might be a bit extreme it is a dangerous sport and nothing can be better than a safety helmet and a protective suit to go with it while racing.

The second safety consideration is knowing the rules of the road. Here are just a couple of them while riding.

If your electric scooter, electric moped, or electric moped motorcycle has turn signals on it, use them. Turn signals are important because other motorists have a better idea of knowing your intentions as to which way you are turning and possibly when.

If you do not have turn signals on your scooter you can use your left arm as a way to signal your turns. To turn left you just hold your left arm straight out. When you turn right you hold your left arm out, bending at the elbow point the rest of your arm and hand straight up. If you are coming to a stop you hold your left arm out, bending at the elbow point the rest of your arm and hand straight down. These same arm signals also apply to motorists.

Approaching intersections on your electric scooter, electric moped, or electric moped motorcycle can be risky. Intersections are the most frequent places where fatalities take place. The number one reason given by motorists is that they did not see the cyclist.

When approaching an intersection and there are other vehicles approaching, always assume they will not stop. Even if they have a stop sign telling them to stop, you must assume they will run the stop sign. Let's face it, the car or truck has way more metal protection than you do.

Exercising this kind of defensive riding attitude will keep you safer and will enhance the joy of riding your electric scooter, electric moped, or electric moped motorcycle.

To summarize, if you have plans of purchasing any kind of scooter, bicycle, or motorcycle for your children, yourself and/or your spouse, consider purchasing safety clothing and equipment such as helmets, knee pads and elbow pads. Secondly, educate yourself and loved ones about the rules of the road. In fact, it would not hurt to check with your local motor vehicle division in your town about motorcycle driver training. The training can apply to scooters as well. Meanwhile, happy shopping for that electric scooter, electric moped, or electric moped motorcycle and enjoy riding it safely.
